Inside Out: A Fusion of Japanese and Nordic Design

Tommy Hui's Award-Winning Residential Interior Design Project

Tommy Hui's design inspiration for "Inside Out" stemmed from an architectural perspective. He focused on the structure of the property and the deduction of the design concept. The development of the porch and the corridor, for example, is based on the concept of a wooden box as the layout of the space. The wall and screen with half back cabinet, as well as the corridor door frame, wall, and ceiling to the facade, create the impression of a wooden box opening.

What sets "Inside Out" apart from other designs is its unique combination of Japanese and Nordic furniture to create a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. Wood and fabric are the primary materials used throughout the flat, complemented by minimal light fittings. The living space features a signature feather chandelier that softens and warms up the space. The concept of "Inside Out" is manifested in the wooden box that connects the entrance and corridor to the living room, showcasing books and art displays, with rooms serving as "Outside" pockets of space for living functions.

The design was realized through a wooden box that connects living spaces and bedrooms, providing ample concealed storage, appliances, and display niches. The storage spaces are concealed, with featured niches for displaying art, keeping the space minimal and clutter-free. The bathrooms celebrate natural materials, pastel colors, and playful accessories.

The project, which started in February 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in June 2017, redefines a functional residential home in a simple, calm, and fresh manner. The design challenge was to achieve the functional wooden box concept that connects the living room and bedrooms, yet remains natural, minimal, and smooth.
